I needed an MP3 player with alot of space, so i decided enough was enough and hopped on board the Apple Express and finally bought an IPod. In the past i have always said they were a waste of money, rubbish, better alternatives etc. Now Apple is in its 6th generation of IPod I have gone on the assumption they have ironed out the bugs, and made a better device, which they have done.
I have the 160GB version, which is basically the biggest good quality MP3 player on the market for a reasonable price. There are other MP4 players, but these are too big, with large screens, and are designed for video playback rather than a portable music player. Battery life is supposed to be 40 Hours which is quite long, i will see if that is the case. It also transfers music very fast. The sound quality is very good, the controls i.e. the jog wheel seems quite good aswell. The biggest reason why i didnt buy a previous IPod was: You had to “convert” your music, battery life was poor, it was expensive in comparison to its rivals. All of those negitives are supposedly gone now, we shall see….
What i dont like about it is the music organisation and the way its transferred. If you have never used an IPod like me, you have to connect the IPod to your computer, use the ITunes software and then move music to your “IPod Library”, then use the Sync to copy the music over to your IPod. It seems when you import music to the library it all goes into 1 “folder” and then you transfer it. This is not so bad if you have a few tracks, but if you want to create a playlist of your favorite songs by different artists this can prove to be hard, as you may have thousands of songs in your library and you have to find each one and add them to a playlist. In the Creative Zen, you would copy folders, this way you could select all the tracks within a folder to make a playlist, or you could play a “folder” in the Zen Device, so you could have an album in a folder. The Ipod seems to rely on ID3 tags, which is not good if your mp3s dont have them, or if like i mentioned above you want to create a playlist with various different songs.
Another rip off is charging. Apple do NOT supply an AC Charging adapter, in fact all you get with it is a USB cable, for charging at your PC. However if you go on a holiday you probably will not take a PC with you, so you have to buy a seperate AC Adapter charger to charge your IPod when you are abroad.
I havent used it much yet, but i will, and i hope it is as good as people say it is. I am giving the Ipod a chance and i will see if i have made the right choice.
